At Northwic, we strive for luxurious, high quality garments that you will want to wear over and over again. All gowns are made to order and are therefore tailored to each individual. You can expect to find friendly service, great communication and beautifully unique dresses.

I'm Amy Howat, the seamstress and designer behind Northwic. As well as my client work, I have experience in creating costumes for stage and screen, including the NZ Opera, various Theatre Companies, 'Dancing with the Stars' and the Evil Dead franchise. I have also been lucky enough to have a garment win a place at the World of Wearable Arts, and my designs have been worn all over the world, from prom night in Pennsylvania, US, to gothic weddings right here in Middle Earth.

We are based in a beautiful rural studio in Auckland, New Zealand, but via a comprehensive measurement list, fabric samples, mock ups and LOTS of photos, brides from all over the world can get their perfect dress.

How I cater to Offbeat Brides

No gown is too extravagant or non-traditional for Northwic. In fact, with our passion for the Victorian era and a background in stage and film costuming, the more offbeat the better!

From Halloween wedding dresses with tiny skull embroideries to romantic medieval gowns, intricate Victorian corsetry, or fantastical steampunk designs, I aim to provide my brides with the ultimate dress of their dreams. You can choose to start with one of our established designs, or have something new designed from scratch (we LOVE challenging custom requests!).

Every dress we create is a collaboration between designer and bride to ensure that we get that perfect reflection of personality and style. Where possible, we like to create gowns as ensembles that can be mixed and matched with other garments so you can wear them over and over again!

We are also now super excited to be able to offer custom suits/tuxedos and waistcoats for both male and female figures!

"A mutual friend referred me to Amy when I was having trouble finding someone willing to make me a custom suit for my wedding. Being a genderqueer person and told ‘no’ when approaching suit makers because I don't have a man's body was very disheartening. However as soon as I approached Amy she responded with enthusiasm and I felt I was in good hands. Her communication is excellent, and she dove into the project of my wedding tuxedo with confidence. The fittings were quick, she's exceptionally good at patterning and very little had to be adjusted. I absolutely adore my tux. Everyone complimented me on it, and asked where it was made. It had pockets everywhere, including a sneaky one in the tails. I have already suggested a couple of friends look up Amy for suits, and am considering getting another jacket made myself. Thank you so much Amy for being a fantastic metal fairy godmother and making my dream a reality." – Jamie Sands, 2018
