Jalopy Theatre and School of Music

Husband and wife team Geoff and Lynette Wiley founded Jalopy in Red Hook, Brooklyn, in 2006 with the hope of fostering a community around a shared appreciation of traditional roots music. Jalopy Theatre seeks both to support local and traveling artists, and to educate students and audiences new to this music and culture through its partnership with Living Traditions, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, promoting and perpetuating traditional folk music.

Jalopy Theatre is also a rentable venue and community hub created by and for artists, dreamers, travelers and activists. We host events and celebrations for persons of all orientations, denominations, and gender identities into our magical, transformable space.

Jalopy Tavern, right next door, is an extension of our entertainment offerings, while also providing celebrated modern southern comfort and upscale pub cuisine. The full kitchen and bar can service special events in the theatre, such as weddings, birthdays, and receptions, while also providing additional space for such events, including back patio space. As a tavern, it's been a neighborhood staple since the 1930s when it was Rocco's Tavern, and it retains many of Rocco's original features.

How I cater to Offbeat Brides

The Jalopy Theatre is the perfect venue for that coveted ‘Brooklyn Wedding’ look, without the typical price or pretension, and with all the warmth, creativity and support that the Jalopy staff is known for.

The Jalopy Theatre and neighboring Jalopy Tavern feature exposed brick walls, stamped tin ceilings, huge skylights, romantic stage and bistro lighting, a Vaudeville-style stage with piano in the theatre, and a good-sized patio with partially covered seating via the tavern. We also have rooms on the second floor where the bridal party can primp.

With access to additional space rental and the catering services of the bar and restaurant, as well as audio/visual expertise, instrument backline, and deep connections to some of the most talented musicians in NYC, we are fully equipped to help you put together your event, within your budget, as you envision it.

Although you are free to cater your day as you like, do check out Jalopy Tavern's sample catering menu, which features some of our modern southern comfort meets upscale pub grub specialities.

“We had our dream wedding experience at Jalopy! The setting was quaint
and exuded the relaxed, celebratory feeling we were looking for to accommodate our 85+ guests. Jalopy's staff was always available for questions, and really made it feel like we were a team. The chef was extremely accommodating, and planned an amazing vegetarian/vegan feast. He was open to discussing the menu (and doing 2 tastings for us!) We couldn't have done it quite as well, and we definitely couldn't have had our wedding in Brooklyn if it wasn't for Jalopy.”–Chloe Stites
