MKM Photography

Hey! I'm Kate. With my husband, Mike, I comprise MKM Photography: wedding and portrait photographers, husband and wife, all-purpose nerds, extremely enthusiastic.

We are dedicated to helping you document any and every moment in honest, vibrant images that tell your story. With a keen eye for the small moments and a love of the stories behind them, MKM Photography is ready to document your memories, regardless of the occasion—but we have to admit that weddings are our favorite.

I'm a writer, always looking for the story. Mike is an engineer, technology-oriented and always ready to talk shop. Though we call Durham, North Carolina home now, we're from Eastern Pennsylvania (high school sweethearts FTW!) but root for Pittsburgh teams; we’re both big nerds; we love bar cookies and tattoos and puppies, and we enjoy meeting and talking with new people of all kinds.

We want you to get to know us, to consider us friends, and we want to get to know you, too! We'll meet you for coffee, a sandwich, beer, wine, ice cream, or pizza, and chat about what you want to get out of your relationship with us as your photographers. Our primary goal is to create beautiful images that document who you are as a couple: We’re not interested in uncomfortable poses, “perfect” backdrops, or fake smiles. We are interested in how you laugh together, the faces you make, how you fit in his arms just so, your favorite spot on her temple to kiss, where you love to go, what you love to do—everything that keeps you real and makes you you. Our favorite weddings are ones that bask in that realness and own it wholly, and our favorite couples are ones who love hard, who have lots of chill and even greater quantities of nerdiness, couples who value photography and its ability to tell a story that lasts.

If we sound like your kind of people (and gosh, we hope we do!), get in touch with Kate to set up a consultation. We look forward to meeting you!

How I cater to Offbeat Brides

Simply put, we are weirdos, and weirdos are 100% our tribe. We planned our own offbeat wedding back in 2010—in a public park and art gallery, with very few florals and lots of friendors, with a lot of DIY décor and a hella fun dance party—so we know how it goes! It’s important to us to document you and your wedding as you really are, not as some glossy magazine or smarmy website (or, often, your mom) thinks you should be! Whatever excites you about your wedding—be it your venue, your décor, the fashion, or the food—is guaranteed to excite us, as well.

More than anything, though, we want to get excited about your love. In the process of becoming invested in our couples’ weddings and love stories, we become invested in your lives and your happiness, in who you are as people and where your journeys take you. This outfits us even better to capture your personality more than just pretty poses, and it means you end up with images that feel so authentically you—because isn’t that what an offbeat wedding is truly about?

“…I picked Kate and Mike before I had a venue or a date or anything. I knew at once I wanted them to be my photographers…Everyone at and after the wedding could not stop talking about how amazing my photographers were…I paid for a photographer and gained some friends.” – Sara, 11 April 2015
