Lakshal Perera, also known as Lucky, is a photographer living in Melbourne, Australia. He loves long walks along the beach, romantic candle lit dinners and using untrue cliches to describe himself. He also likes speaking about himself in the third person.
Lakshal always wanted to be an astronaut when he was a child, but realised he was too tall. He then decided the nearest thing to it was to be a scientist and spend 10 years at University training for it. He loves all things science and his partner says he is a little bit like Raj from The Big Bang Theory, with much less cool sideburns. His partner however does say his overall coolness is greater than of Raj.
One day about six years ago, a magical fairy came to Lakshal in his sleep and said, "Hey, you should TOTES become a photographer!" Lakshal bought a camera and started practicing and a few months later was asked to photograph a wedding. After much thinking, he decided he would do so and that's where it all began.
Lakshal now considers himself as a "pretty alright" photographer (Australians are a generally humble lot…) with a fine art style. He feels at his most comfortable photographing and it comes quite easily to him. He steers clear of all of the boring shots and produces only the most awesome work for his clients. He wants to try and create a beautiful and artistic record of the day, reflective of the two people, not just some staged cliche that has no meaning. He attempts to be as invisible as possible but finds this sometimes challenging as he is a 6 foot 4 inch tall dark-skinned guy.
His love of people makes him think that wedding photography the best job in the world.
"I can not recommend Lucky highly enough! He made us feel so relaxed and got along with everyone so well, it felt like he was a guest! Upbeat all day and willing to try anything, even in the face of no dinner! (catering mishap!) Like having a really good friend that's also a totally kick ass and professional photographer! Also, he got my wedding on OffbeatBride, which is pretty *squeee* worthy!"
How I cater to Offbeat Brides
Offbeat, for me, is pretty much the essence of what I love doing. I think people spend far too much of their life doing what they "should" and what society expects them to do. Life is too short to be lived without doing things *your* way, with sincerity and meaning; tokenism has no place in my life!
If you think that you want a photographer who understands your ethos, I can be that person! I am sincere and inclusive and I want you to feel like I am a guest who just so happens to take awesome photographs for you (without drinking all of your beer). I had an offbeat wedding myself so I know what you want from your celebration.
I also firmly believe in the right for everyone to be able to get married if they want so civil unions and same-sex partnerships are things that I love being involved in. Love is love, regardless of who you are!
Examples of my work
- Offbeat Bride was lovely enough to feature one of my favourite weddings of all time: Shane and Jenner!
- There's so much more on my website, just hunt around for a while on the blog and you'll waste your afternoon away!
